Matinée Presentation:

“My name is Wilma Gaspili and they call me Ate Wamz; I am a traditional tattoo artist from an indigenous tribe in the Philippines.  My passion is to promote and revive the vanishing tattoo culture within my community.  I travel to tattoo conventions all over the Philippines and around Asia, not to compete but to share and showcase my cultural heritage from the Cordillera region.  For me, tattoo is an art form that I am proud to present on a global scale.  As an indigenous person, it brings me great pride to share our beautiful culture with the world and to show the interconnectedness of tattoo, culture, and beliefs.  At the Lyman Museum, I will present a slide show and video of my travels, featuring my practice of traditional citrus-thorn tapping tattoo and sharing the meanings of certain patterns.  My presentation includes a filmed ceremony that I conducted with Apo Anno of Benguet, a chiefly hunter of whose tattooed mummy I am a guardian.”  Learn about the Mambabatek artistic tradition—part of the Asia-Pacific family of tattoo cultures–on either of two occasions: Monday, October 28 or Tuesday, October 29.  $3; free to Museum members.  For details: (808) 935-5021 or www.lymanmuseum.org
